2018’s God of War is widely regarded as one of the best video games of all time. And it’s difficult to argue otherwise. Coming five years after the release of the previous entry in the series – 2013’s God of War: Ascension for the PlayStation 3 – God of War revitalised the series and enticed a whole swathe of new fans in the process. As a result of its success, a sequel, God of War Ragnarok, was green lit shortly afterwards. But after four years in development, we’re still yet to have a confirmed God of War Ragnarok release date. With 2022 being set as the target year, let’s take a look at what we know and answer some burning questions about God of War Ragnarok…
When does God of War Ragnarok come out
The big question everyone is asking is: “When does God of War Ragnarok come out?” Well, here’s what we know about when to expect the second instalment in the Norse era of God of War.
God of War Ragnarok Release Date
God of War Ragnarok‘s release date is slated for 2022. Given that we’re already well into 2022 and are yet to get a specific release date, it’s likely the game won’t arrive until at least Q4 2022. However, it’s also possible God of War Ragnarok won’t be with us until 2023 – in fact, many fans think it’s increasingly likely.
That said, industry journalist Jason Schreier isn’t convinced the game will be delayed until next year. He responded to a fan’s question on Reddit regarding the game being delayed with a one word answer: “Nope”. So, there’s still hope for a 2022 release date yet.
Initial Release Date
During the 2020 PlayStation 5 Showcase event, God of War Ragnarok was officially announced with an initial release date set for 2021. However, in June 2021, Sony delayed the game to 2022.
Release date of God of War 5
Fans refer to different games in the series as “God of War 5”. If you include just the home console games, 2018’s God of War was the fifth entry in the series. However, if you exclude God of War: Ascension (which was a prequel), then God of War Ragnarok is “God of War 5”. As mentioned, God of War Ragnarok release date is set for sometime in 2022.
PS4 Release
God of War Ragnarok was originally announced as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. However, it has since been confirmed that the game will receive a PS4 release.
For those wondering why, Sony Interactive Entertainment pledged to support the PS4 through to at least 2022. This is because of the worldwide chip shortage impacting PS5 stocks and availability. As a result, it makes sense for the company to want to release one of their biggest games for both consoles to ensure the highest possible sales.
God of War
The series began in 2005 with the release of the original God of War for the PlayStation 2. It introduced us to Kratos, a Spartan warrior tasked with finding Pandora’s Box and bringing down the eponymous Greek god of war, Ares. This era of the series, which spanned from the original game to 2013’s Ascension, was focussed on Greek mythology and saw Kratos eventually defeat the Olympian gods.
2018’s game picks up centuries after God of War III and reboots the series with a focus on Norse mythology. Kratos now lives in Scandinavia with his young son, Atreus. In the game, Kratos and Atreus aim to fulfil the last wish of Atreus’ mother and Kratos’ second wife, Faye, by scattering her ashes atop the highest peak in the nine realms. However, Atreus is unaware that his father is, in fact, the Greek god of war and so doesn’t know about his own divine heritage.

- 2010 – God of War: Ghost of Sparta
- 2013 – God of War: Ascension
- 2018 – God of War

Ragnarok
God of War Ragnarok picks up three years after the events of the last game. The realm has endured Fimbulwinter, a long winter that spanned three summers, and heralds the arrival of Ragnarok – the end of the world. Atreus, now a teenager confused about his own divinity, seeks answers as well as a way to stop Ragnarok from occurring.
How long is God of War?
2018’s God of War is approximately 20 hours in length. For completionists gunning for the platinum trophy, it will take about 40-50 hours to 100% the game.
God of War Ragnarok is likely to be a similar length to the previous game, so expect between 20 and 30 hours of action.
GoW Thor
Thor has proven to be one of the most controversial aspects of God of War Ragnarok.
At the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, fans got a glimpse of the first Ragnarok gameplay trailer. They also got to see the game’s version of Norse god Thor for the first time. His appearance in the game differs greatly from that of the MCU’s Thor, instead being closer to his portrayal in Norse mythological literature. Many fans labelled GoW‘s Thor as “Fat Thor” and took issue with his appearance in the game. Others, however, liked that Santa Monica Studio opted for a more traditional approach to the character.
God of War PS5 Update
An official God of War PS5 update was released on 2 February 2021 bringing 2160c resolution and an “Enhanced Experience” 60fps mode to the game.
God of War Nintendo Switch
God of War (2018) was released for Microsoft Windows in January 2022. Since then, some fans have been speculating that a God of War Nintendo Switch port might be released in the near future. Unfortunately for Nintendo Switch users, nothing has been officially announced in regards to the game coming to Switch.
It is also highly unlikely that God of War Ragnarok will be released for the Nintendo Switch due to the console’s technical restraints.
