1. Call of Duty: Vanguard

Call of Duty: Vanguard is the latest instalment in the long-running Call of Duty series. And if your partner enjoys online multiplayer games, this could be the one for them. Vanguard takes the series back to World War II. In its single-player campaign, players “will experience influential battles of World War II as they fight for victory across the Eastern and Western Fronts of Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa.” The campaign is relatively short, clocking in around 4-6 hours. However, if you think your boyfriend or husband wants something quick to pick up and play this year it’ll likely suit them just fine.
As with all Call of Duty games, the multiplayer is the main focus in Vanguard. It features familiar gameplay and game modes, and is easy to pick up and play. If your partner’s friends are playing it, it’s also great for a bit of socialising online while gaming during the cold winter months. Vanguard also features the return of the co-operative Call of Duty Zombies game mode, which is a fan favourite. Players must work together to fight off hordes of the undead.
2. Forza Horizon 5

Forza Horizon 5 is the newest entry game in the widely-popular and critically-acclaimed Forza racing series. It’s well-known for its impressive visuals and exciting driving. That makes Forza Horizon 5 a must-purchase for any car or racing enthusiast this Christmas.
It features the biggest open world in the series to date. Environments include cities, volcanoes, jungles, ancient ruins, beaches and everything in between. There’s also a new dynamic weather system that adds another layer of complexity to Forza‘s deep driving mechanics.
3. FIFA 22
Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Stadia, PC
Genre: Football Simulation

FIFA 22 is this year’s edition of the super successful football simulation series. And it’s rumoured to be the last bearing the ‘FIFA‘ name, which may add some novelty. FIFA 22 is a safe bet if your partner is a football or sports fan and loves video games. It features gameplay and modes that players will recognise from previous FIFA games. And the PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Stadia versions include new “Hypermotion” technology which uses motion-capture to replicate real-life action on the pitch.
Just one word of warning though. Stay away from the Nintendo Switch version of the game. FIFA 22: Legacy Edition is almost entirely unchanged from FIFA 19 (yes, the version from three years ago). It has been widely panned by critics and isn’t worth your money.
4. Battlefield 2042

Battlefield 2042 arrives in November to much anticipation. After the previous instalment – Battlefield V – failed to live up to expectations, developer DICE have seemingly gone all out to make 2042 look as exciting as possible. The game is set in the 2040s after decades of escalating tensions between nations. When satellites crash to Earth and cause wide-spread blackouts, things reach boiling point and all-out war erupts.
Battlefield 2042 is online multiplayer-only, meaning there’s no single player story campaign and you need to have an internet connection to play. While that might put some people off, 2042‘s deep multiplayer mode will keep many coming back for months to come. If you’re looking for an exhilarating multiplayer experience to sink your teeth into, Battlefield 2042 could be it.
5. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition
Available on: PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Android, iOS
Genre: First-person shooter
Rating: M for Mature, 18
Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is a bundle of three classic GTA games newly remastered for modern consoles. It includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Each are considered among the greatest games of all time.
If your partner enjoyed them on the PS2 back in the day, this may be an essential purchase. The Trilogy features superior graphics, improved controls, smoother gameplay and much more. That means this will be the best way to play these incredible games, which were in need of a refresh to bring them into 2021.
