Bandai Namco has confirmed in a post on X that Elden Ring players must defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood in order to access the upcoming Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.

The DLC, which is set for release on all platforms on 21 June, will introduce an entirely new area and plot line to the game as well as new weapons, magic, equipment and more.

Shadow of the Erdtree will likely be the first time many players dip back into Elden Ring since completing its main storyline. However, if Steam, PS5, and Xbox achievements/trophies are anything to go by, lots of players will be forced to play more of the base game before they can check out the new content.

Bandai Namco’s warning to players was in response to a post from streamer Cohh Carnage, who noticed that only 37.8% of Steam players have the achievement for defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood. This prompted the company to warn: “Friendly PSA for all those looking forward to #ELDENRING Shadow of the Erdtree. You have less than 2 weeks to prepare!”

Over on PlayStation 5, only 34.7% of players have earned the trophy for beating Mohg, Lord of Blood (AKA Shardbearer Mohg). Meanwhile, an even smaller 22.98% have defeated the boss on Xbox.

The likely reason for this is because the Lord of Blood is optional. That means he does not need to be beaten in order to advance the base game’s story. Like other optional bosses in Elden Ring, he is easy to miss if you don’t know he is available to fight in the first place.

Mohg, Lord of Blood is located underground in Mohgwyn Palace and is considered one of Elden Ring‘s hardest bosses. Miquella – a central character in Shadow of the Erdtree‘s story – is trapped inside a cocoon at Mohgwyn Palace which is where the DLC begins.

So, if you haven’t yet beaten Mohg, Lord of Blood, you need to reinstall Elden Ring early and get to work.
