WWE has seen countless tag teams come and go throughout its long and storied existence. But you might’ve forgotten the Dashing Ones.
The Dashing Ones was the name of Drew McIntrye and Cody Rhodes’ tag team. It got a brief, albeit amusing, mention on the most recent edition of WWE Monday Night Raw.
Drew McIntyre was confronting Cody in the ring, where they heatedly discussed their pasts and futures. McIntyre reminded Cody that they were once WWE Tag Team Champions.
He noted to the crowd “That’s true… You might have to go in Google. That’s 100% true.” Drew then asked Cody if he remembered their tag team name, to which Rhodes replied “The Dashing Ones.”
Drew sarcastically expressed his disbelief that they didn’t “go to the top with that name.”
For many fans, the Dashing Ones will be an obscure and distant memory. Others may not have even been born when it was active.
As a reminder, let’s get into the history of the Dashing Ones – Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre’s short-lived but championship-winning tag team.
The brief history of the Dashing Ones in WWE
The Dashing Ones was the tag team name for Drew McIntrye and Cody Rhodes. It was a combination of their nicknames at the time – “the Chosen One” (McIntrye) and “Dashing” (Rhodes).
The team was formed when Rhodes and McIntrye attacked Christian and Matt Hardy in September 2010. Later that month at Night of Champions, they won the WWE Tag Team Championship (now known as the WWE Raw Tag Team Championship) in an unremarkable Tag Team Turmoil match.
The pair held the titles for a brief 35-day run, before losing the belts to the unlikely team of John Cena and David Otunga at Bragging Rights 2010.
While the prestige and importance of the Tag Team Championships in WWE have risen in recent years, back in 2010 they were largely ignored and irrelevant.
For the most part, champions were random pairs of wrestlers with nothing else to do. Often, WWE brass couldn’t even be bothered to think of creative names for the teams – hence “the Dashing Ones”.
Rhodes and McIntyre’s reign featured no notable feuds and the team quickly disbanded just five days after losing the belts.
Following the dissolution of their tag team, Rhodes would become a regular feature on SmackDown as a mid-carder. Conversely, McIntryre’s stock fell even further in WWE and he was relegated to low-card feuds with few notable storylines or victories.
Drew was eventually placed into 3MB alongside Heath Slater and Jinder Mahal before being released from WWE in June 2014. Cody was released by WWE in 2016, however both wrestlers would eventually make their way back to the company.
