This Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (MW3) guide explains what Special Zombies are.

MW3‘s Zombies mode (also known as MWZ) is essentially an extraction-based looter shooter. That makes it very different from previous round-based iterations of the mode. It is described in-game as “open world” and takes place on Warzone‘s huge Urzikstan map.

Looting and acquiring better gear is the name of the game. And one of the best way to do that (while advancing the mode’s storyline) is to complete missions. Some of these missions, such as Act II’s “Shocked” mission, require you to kill so-called “Special Zombies”.

However, it isn’t made clear exactly what special zombies are. So, where do you find them and what do they look like? Let’s get into it.

What are Special Zombies?

There are three types of Special Zombies. They are Manglers, Mimics and Disciples.

Manglers are large, heavily armoured, and partially-mechanised. They deliver powerful blade attacks and can shoot you with an energy cannon. Mimics are perhaps the easiest to recognise thanks to their horrific appearance. They can disguise themselves as loot boxes and other items and can grab the player with their tentacles.

Disciples can be the most challenging of the three special zombie variants. That’s because these creatures can fly and are capable of draining your health. Shooting its glowing hands will prevent it from draining health points. Disciples can also strengthen lesser undead.

Special zombies can appear anywhere on the map, however they are more common in the orange and red zones. The best way of finding and killing them is to head into the orange zone and begin an Outlast contract. This will spawn huge hordes of undead, as well as numerous special zombies.

When fighting them, it’s best to go in prepared. I recommend pack-a-punching your main weapon at least once, having a two-plate armour vest at the minimum, and acquiring the Juggernog and Quick Revive perks.

Of course, if you have stronger weapons and better equipment, you will be far better placed for defeating special zombies.
