With the end of the year nearly upon us, conversations will soon turn to the 2023 Game of the Year. There are a few top contenders: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate III, Starfield, Diablo IV and Spider-Man 2. But then there’s the other end of the spectrum, the worst game of 2023. And the new King Kong game might be the number one contender.

Skull Island: Rise of Kong comes out today, 17 October. However, one X user shared a clip of the game and it quickly went viral for all the wrong reasons.

@RickDaSquirrel posted a clip from the upcoming King Kong game and wrote, “DO NOT BUY THE NEW KING KONG GAME. IT IS A COMPLETE SCAM”. The short video showed footage of an actual cutscene from the game.

Looking like something from a PS1 game, the cutscene starts with a roaring purple dinosaur. The camera then cuts to a still image of (presumably?) the same roaring dino before an enraged Kong jumps and slams his fists into the ground.

X users responded in predictably sarcastic fashion. “Looks like a GOTY contender ngl,” wrote @MJ_Hernandez. @ShinyGlaceon3 asked, “We going back to Ps1???”

It might sound harsh to judge a whole game based on a 15 second clip – but when you see the footage it’s hard to imagine that Skull Island: Rise of Kong will be anything other than awful.

When I first saw it, I assumed it was a mobile game. However, it is actually due to launch on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Skull Island: Rise of Kong retails for £44.99/$49.99 on the PlayStation Store.

How something like this has made it to release is anyone’s guess – but I suppose we have to blame the publishers, GameMill Entertainment, for taking it to market.
