Star Wars: Ahsoka‘s first season has concluded and it was something of a mixed bag. While it delivered some excellent action sequences and interesting plot points, its middling finale encapsulated a show short on stakes and reliant on fan service. With that being said, it did present some compelling questions that fans will no doubt be asking. In the episode’s closing moments, Thrawn called Ahsoka a ronin. But what exactly did he mean by this?
During Part Eight’s climax, Ahsoka and Wren fail to stop Thrawn from escaping Peridea. While Ezra Bridger did make it back to their galaxy, Wren and Ahsoka were left behind and reunited with the Noti convoy. It is unclear exactly how the pair will make it back to the main galaxy, but the finale strongly hinted that there is more Ahsoka to come.
Anakin Skywalker’s force ghost could be seen watching over the stranded Ahsoka as the episode ended. So, how does all this tie into Thrawn’s final words to Ahsoka: “Perhaps, this is where a ronin such as you belongs.”
Why does Thrawn call Ahsoka a ronin and what does it mean?
In feudal Japan, a ronin was a masterless samurai who travelled aimlessly.
This description could be applied to Ahsoka as she has no home, her master is dead, and she is stranded on a distant planet.
With that being said, Thrawn is arguably incorrect in believing that Ahsoka is without her master. After all, Anakin appeared before her earlier in the season to deliver her final lessons. He is also seen watching over her at the end of Part Eight, as mentioned.
It is notable that Thrawn describes Ahsoka as a “worthy opponent”. Likewise, he also states that despite never meeting her, he knows her because he knew Anakin. Before departing Peridea, Thrawn ponders how similar Ahsoka might become to Anakin.
Of course, it remains to be seen if Ahsoka will ultimately bring down Thrawn. But it appears both of their relationships with Anakin may come into play.
Season 2 of Ahsoka has not been confirmed and it is not a given that the show will be made. However, given its mostly-positive critical reception and cliffhanger ending, it seems Disney does intend to make more. It will certainly be interesting to see how Ahsoka’s life as a “ronin” on Peridea plays out if/when the show returns.
