This Baldur’s Gate 3 guide explains what white arrows on quest markers mean.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the best RPGs of the year. However, as a video game, it’s far from straightforward and its various systems take some getting used to. This includes its map, which features icons and markers that may not immediately make sense.

During my early hours in Baldur’s Gate 3, I spent more time than I care to admit scratching my head. One example of this was the game’s map markers, specifically the white arrows that sometimes accompany quest markers.

I had to complete a few different quests and their various objectives before I realised what that little white arrow meant. And, if you don’t know what it means, it could be hindering your quest progression. So, allow me to explain…

What do the white arrows on quest markers mean in Baldur’s Gate 3?

The white arrows on quest markers indicate whether a quest objective is above or below you.

If the arrow is pointing upwards, your quest objective will be above you. If the arrow is pointing downwards, it will be below you.

The marker doesn’t just represent floors, either. It can also indicate whether an objective is above or below head height. For example, if your objective is directing you to an item on a shelf below your character’s head height, the white arrow will be pointing downwards.

Therefore, it’s important to carefully check all around your character if you’re trying to locate a quest objective.
