Call of Duty fans have never been able to get over their nostalgia for older titles in the series. Games like Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops II remain beloved. But their multiplayer components have been near-impossible to play for quite some time due to crippling server issues. However, in a surprise move, Activision has suddenly fixed the servers for older CoD titles. Players have since flocked back to old school Call of Duty games. But are old Call of Duty servers fixed on PC?
While Activision has continued to release Call of Duty games yearly since the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, the franchise’s recent titles haven’t received the same amount of love as the classics. Fans still long for the days of OG CoD — and current player numbers on Xbox demonstrate that.
According to Call of Duty streamer and news account ModernWarzone, there are “more people playing 10+ year old Call of Duty games on Xbox right now than there are people playing Halo Infinite and Battlefield 2042 COMBINED.”
That’s an impressive stat which clearly illustrates the passion and desire fans have for classic Call of Duty games. Now the servers have been restored following Microsoft’s recent regulatory success regarding its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, fans are keen to know which platforms have benefitted.
Are old Call of Duty servers fixed on PC?
Old Call of Duty servers have not been fixed on PC or PlayStation. Activision has only fixed the servers for old Call of Duty games on Xbox.
It is worth noting that Xbox 360 games are backwards compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S consoles. That means players can play old Call of Duty games on their modern hardware with ease. Conversely, PS3 versions of classic CoD titles cannot be played on PS4 and PS5 which severely limits potential player numbers.
PC versions of old CoD games also suffer from significant security vulnerabilities. This may have factored into Activision’s decision to only restore servers on Xbox.
Call of Duty news website CharlieIntel has confirmed that servers have only been restored on Xbox: “The older Call of Duty game matchmaking servers are still broken on PS3 and PC, with PC being [filled] with hacks and cheats. No indiction yet if these will be fixed like the Xbox 360 version.”
It remains to be seen if PC will eventually receive the same treatment as Xbox. However, for now, at least some Call of Duty fans are able to enjoy the all-time greats without any matchmaking issues.
