All Elite Wrestling is known for providing an exciting alternative to WWE. Ever since its inception in 2019, the promotion has consistently delivered unique matchups and match types. This has helped it develop its own brand of professional wrestling. One of these popular match types is Anarchy in the Arena. The next of these matches is set to take place at Double or Nothing 2023. It will see The Elite battle the Blackpool Combat Club. But what is an Anarchy in the Arena match?
While professional wrestling promotions feature many similar match types (such as steel cage or ladder matches), many also create their own. WWE, for example, has Hell in a Cell, while Impact Wrestling has Ultimate X.
Anarchy in the Arena is exclusive to AEW. It is typically reserved for blood feuds between warring factions. After months of fighting, The Elite will face off with the Blackpool Combat Club in one of these matches. It is sure to be a brutal and chaotic fight.
But what does this unique match type involve and what can you expect from the bout at Double or Nothing 2023?
What is an Anarchy in the Arena match in AEW?
An Anarchy in the Arena match is a type of Tornado Tag Team match which pits two teams against each other in a 5v5 contest. Participants are allowed to fight throughout the entire arena (including backstage and in the crowd) and make use of any weapons they find. The match ends by a single pinfall or submission.
There has only been one previous Anarchy in the Arena match in AEW history. It took place at Double or Nothing 2022 where the Jericho Appreciation Society defeated the Blackpool Combat Club, Eddie Kingston, Santana and Ortiz.
The match was violent and bloody and involved the use of a variety of weapons. This included tables, steel steps, ring ropes, steel chairs, barbed wire boards, and a fire extinguisher.
It is also the successor to the Stadium Stampede match. Stadium Stampede matches took place during the 2020 and 2021 Double or Nothing events and were based on a similar premise.
Participants had complete access to the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL stadium and were able to brawl throughout the building in a no holds barred 5v5 contest.
When Double or Nothing returned to Las Vegas in 2022, AEW were unable to use the Jacksonville Jaguars stadium. Therefore, the Stadium Stampede match was dropped in favour of Anarchy in the Arena.
