When is Verdansk coming back to Call of Duty Warzone? (2023)

Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the most successful and popular multiplayer games of the last few years. Its exciting battle royale offering has been a top favourite of gamers since its launch in 2020. Its primary map was Verdansk – a huge sprawling city set in the fictional country of Kastovia. While the map certainly had its detractors during the early years of Warzone, fans have grown to miss it greatly. That begs one major question – when is Verdansk coming back to Call of Duty: Warzone

The original version of the Verdansk map existed as Warzone‘s primary battleground until The Destruction of Verdansk event in April 2021. It was part of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War‘s second season which saw the introduction of Verdansk ’84.

As its name suggests, Verdansk ’84 was a new version of the map set during the Cold War. During this time, complaints about Verdansk began to ramp up. Developers Infinity Ward and Raven Software (along with publisher Activision) started receiving a lot of criticism from Warzone‘s passionate fan base.

Players largely agreed that the original Verdansk was the superior map. But it was the next Warzone map that divided fans even further.

The Warzone Caldera map launched in December 2021 at the start of Call of Duty: Vanguard‘s first season.

Caldera would remain the primary map for the game (alongside Resurgence mode maps Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep) until the release of the Warzone sequel, Warzone 2.0, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

In Warzone 2.0, the main map shifted to the middle eastern setting of Al Mazrah. However, that map has also received significant criticism from fans and content creators.

Is Verdansk coming back to Warzone?

Because every new map since Verdansk has been criticised by players – not least because of various bugs and glitches – you may be wondering if it (and its original gulag) will ever come back. So, will Verdansk return to Warzone?

There has been no official announcement from Activision confirming that Verdansk is coming back to Call of Duty: Warzone. Furthermore, there are no credible rumours or evidence suggesting that Verdansk will ever return.

Of course, it remains a fan favourite across all platforms. But there is nothing to indicate any potential returns in the near future. It is all just speculation from fans.

Despite this, players will be able to revisit Verdansk with the launch of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile for iOS and Android devices in late 2023. Its primary battle royale map will be Verdansk.

Can you still play Warzone Caldera?

While Verdansk is unavailable to players on console and PC, Caldera is still accessible and playable. You can play it via a legacy version of Warzone 1

This features the gameplay fans know and love from the original Warzone and makes for a fun alternative to Warzone 2.0 and Al Mazrah.

However, Warzone Caldera is limited to battle royale solos and quads only. So, don’t expect to receive the full experience that was available prior to Warzone 2.0‘s launch.

Remasters of old Warzone maps

Given that Caldera is still available to play, Call of Duty fans may be wondering if remasters of old Warzone maps will ever be released.

As mentioned, there are no plans (that have been made public) to re-release Verdansk outside of Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Likewise, there is no indication that Rebirth Island or Fortune’s Keep will be re-released or remastered for Warzone 2.0 in the future.

For now, fans will have to make do with Al Mazrah and Ashika Island. If you’re looking for other areas to experience in WZ2, the game’s DMZ mode also features the Building 21 map and “secret” Koschei Complex.
