Many new video games slip by unnoticed every year. But that is not the case for Chrono Odyssey, which impressed unsuspecting gamers upon the release of its new gameplay trailer on 3rd May. The trailer excited viewers with its stunning visuals, flashy combat, and huge boss battles. However, many will be asking “what is Chrono Odyssey?” as hype for the game begins to ramp up.

In the article below, we detail everything we know about Chrono Odyssey so far.

What is Chrono Odyssey?

Chrono Odyssey is an open-world MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) developed by Chrono Studio using Unreal Engine 5 and published by South Korean company Npixel.

Setting

Chrono Odyssey is set in the fantasy world of Setera. Setera is described on the official Chrono Odyssey website as “a land full of unexplored regions, with rewards and riches yet unknown.” It is a seemingly idyllic realm cloaked in beauty and lush wilderness. But the fabric of time and space is warped in Setera and it harbours a dark and perpetual conflict against the Void. The Void are “otherworldly invaders that reject the existence of life itself.”

An array of enigmatic wonders and terrors await players who dare to try and unravel Setera’s mysteries.

Setera’s landscape will reportedly change with passing seasons in the game. We also know that Setera will feature varied locations, including forests, cities, castles, and battlefields.

Gameplay

Combat in Chrono Odyssey resembles that of a faster-paced Elden Ring. However, the game will require a heavy emphasis on teamwork and collaboration to overcome the world’s immense challenges.

Numerous weapons will be available for players to use and switch between. These include swords, daggers, bows, and guns. Magic, melee, and dual-wielding will also be a key part of Chrono Odyssey‘s combat.

In an official PlayStation Blog, Samuel Seo, PD of Chrono Studio, explained that players will need to “Master the basics of attack, defense, dodge, and switch seamlessly between multiple weapons in real-time to gain the upper hand in battle.”

It also appears that Chrono Odyssey will feature horseback riding in some form, as well as other mounts for players to use.

You can check out gameplay footage in this official trailer.

Graphics

Perhaps the most notable feature of the game is its incredible graphics. While it is unclear whether the finished product will emulate the impressive visuals shown in the trailers, it certainly looks like players are in for a visual treat.

The trailers showcase rich, detailed, and varied environments that are huge in scope. It seems players can also look forward to immersive lighting effects and will be able to watch vegetation sway in the wind.

Characters in Chrono Odyssey

Character customisation and classes

Players will be able to create their own character in Chrono Odyssey. This includes gender and appearance options and creating “a personalized combat style”.

There will be six character classes to choose from:

  • Swordsman
  • Ranger
  • Sorcerer
  • Paladin
  • Berserker
  • Assassin

Enemies

Chrono Odyssey will have a numerous enemy types. This appears to include dragons, human soldiers, undead, insects, wolves, demons, and more, although specific details are limited.

Npixel has confirmed five “Opposing Powers” in Chrono Odyssey. Presumably, enemies in the game will belong to these groups. They are as follows:

  • The Guardians – Those who protect Setera under the guidance of “The Great Ones”.
  • The Void – Otherworldly invaders that reject the existence of life itself.
  • The Broken – Those whose bodies and minds have succumbed to Void contamination.
  • The Outcasts – Those who are all the more threatening for their humanity.
  • The World Movers – Those who had the strength to survive and lay roots in Setera.

Bosses in Chrono Odyssey

Few details have been shared about bosses, however they are set to be a large part of the game – literally.

Npixel has confirmed “many powerful bosses within the game world”. This includes a boss called Eltanius which is described as “massive”.

Chrono, Time and the Chronotector

Chrono is another key feature. Players can use a device known as the Chronotector to manipulate spacetime in Setera. This will include the ability to “stop time, rewind events, and explore other timelines and overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges.”

The Chronotector is a “powerful artifact said to have been created by a mysterious ancient civilization”.

Exactly how the manipulation of spacetime will impact online gameplay is unknown. However, we’re intrigued to see how Chrono Studio handle it.
