The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is now 12 years old. It’s undoubtedly one of the most iconic video games in history and remains popular today. One of the reasons for Skyrim‘s enduring popularity is the sheer variety of characters and builds players can create. This enables players to restart the game numerous times and enjoy a different experience each time with different types of characters. Upon recently restarting the game, one Skyrim player encountered a weird glitch that altered the game’s unforgettable opening scene.

In Skyrim, dragons have returned to terrorise the land. The ancient prophecy of the Dragonborn has been fulfilled and the player character – as the “Dragonborn” – is destined to defeat them. The player embarks on a quest to unravel the mystery behind the dragons’ return and save the land from destruction. Along the way, they encounter a variety of interesting characters and factions. This ultimately leads to an epic battle against the dragon-god Alduin.

Perhaps the most memorable moment in Skyrim is right at the beginning. The player awakens on a horse-drawn carriage and is greeted by Ralof with the iconic line: “Hey, you, you’re finally awake!” You soon discover you have been captured by Imperial soldiers and are being taken to your execution along with some rebels.

For Skyrim player u/prancydancey, a surprising glitch caused an eerie error with the scene. Rather than awakening on the carriage, the player found themselves next to it.

In a Reddit post, they wrote: “I decided to do a new play through after years and it started like this. This is the opening carriage ride apparently.” u/prancydancey shared footage of the glitch which caused them to load into the scene at the side of the road surrounded by prisoners and guards.

The NPCs stare ominously at u/prancydancey’s character as they pan the camera around to show the strange occurrence.

Other Skyrim fans were quick to share their thoughts on the strange experience. One wrote: “They look tired of you keep [sic] starting a new game.” Another player joked: “Dragonborn, this is an intervention. You need to stop new playthroughs”.

Interestingly, u/Iceedemon888 said they experienced this glitch the first time they played Skyrim. “Lol this is how my first ever loading of [sic] the [game] went except after like a minute a pack of wolves came and attacked. After the fight everybody walked off in separate directions leaving me there to ponder what even is this game….”

In a subsequent comment, OP u/prancydancey speculated as to why they found the glitch so alarming. “It’s so familiar that this was actually disturbing. Like if I turned on a favourite childhood movie and the actors just silently stared at me with no opening credits.”
