Red Dead Redemption 2 is often seen by fans as the gift that keeps on giving. After countless hours spent in the wild west, players are still unearthing new secrets. It often seems that no matter how many times you’ve played it, there’s always something new to learn about the game. And that’s exactly what happened to one player who discovered a tragic Red Dead Redemption 2 easter egg after their seventh playthrough.
Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place in a fictionalised version of the United States in the year 1899. It tells the story of outlaw Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in the wild west. Its vast open world has served as an exquisitely detailed playground for players since the game’s launch in 2018.
Not only does it feature rich environments, bustling towns, lifelike NPCs, and incredible action, it also includes countless callbacks to 2010’s Red Dead Redemption.
For one Reddit user, it has taken seven complete playthroughs to notice a poignant Red Dead Redemption 2 easter egg. At the end of the original Red Dead Redemption, husband and wife characters John and Abigail Marston are buried next to each other on their ranch. Players assume control of their son Jack Marston for the remainder of the game.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is, of course, a prequel to the previous entry. Following the tragic death of lead character Arthur Morgan, John Marston becomes the game’s playable character. By the end of the game, John and Abigail are living on their ranch. As the game comes to a close, they are stood overlooking the ranch in the exact place they will later be buried.
The Reddit user wrote: “After 7 playthroughs I only just realised they’re stood at their graves”. Other fans chimed in with their thoughts on the foreshadowing. “That is also where they got married” said u/erinmadrian. u/mickecd1989 added: “Why would you do this to me”.
u/Ok-Cantaloupe1529 summarised what we are all thinking when it comes to Red Dead Redemption. “The parallels and foreshadowing [in] the RDR games is insane.”, they commented.
