Black Mirror has been off our screens since 2019. It has been sorely missed in the years since, particularly due to world-changing events (such as Covid-19) and technological developments like NFTs and the rise of AI chatbots. But in a surprise announcement on 26 April, the show’s official Twitter account shocked the Internet with a new Black Mirror Season 6 trailer.
The beloved Netflix anthology series – which tells grippingly spooky tales about technology in the modern world – certainly has lots of ground to cover since Season 5. The upcoming season promises new stories featuring popular actors including Aaron Paul, Zazie Beetz, Kate Mara, Paapa Essiedu, and Josh Harnett. It is set to arrive on Netflix in June 2023 with no specific release date announced at the time of writing.
While the hype is well and truly real for the brand new season of Black Mirror, one specific element of the trailer stood out to fans – its music. 2WEI & Bri Bryant’s haunting rendition of The Ink Spots’ 1941 song “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” plays throughout. It sets the tone for Black Mirror‘s sixth season perfectly. But it also struck a chord with fans of the Fallout series of post-apocalyptic role-playing games.
As fans of the series will remember, “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” was featured in the teaser trailer for Fallout 3 all the way back in 2007. And fans were quick to share their feelings of nostalgia for the game on Twitter in response to our tweet about the choice of music. “If you know, you know.”, we tweeted alongside a gif of the famous Fallout “Please Stand By” slide.
In response, Twitter user @bbroastro said: “Instantly thought this and now want to go and collect all the bobbleheads I missed”. @hizperion commented: “and war.. war never changes” while @Rapko said: “that’s immediately where my mind went! haha”.
Twitter user @TheCanadalorian speculated that series creator Charlie Brooker deliberately included the song because of his love of video games. “Charlie’s a gamer… he knows”, they tweeted. Interestingly, Charlie Brooker penned a blog for The Guardian in 2009 titled “Why I love video games” in which he specifically mentions Fallout 3 and calls it “so rewarding” and “funny and horrible in equal measure”.
Whatever the reason for the song’s inclusion in the Black Mirror trailer, we can’t wait to check out the new season when it arrives on Netflix in June. And we might just go and play some Fallout 3 in the meantime.
