HBO’s The Last Of Us TV adaption is finally here. And it’s probably the most anticipated show of the year. However, its creators have stressed that the show differs from the popular games in a number of ways – including the show’s timeline. So, how old is Joel in The Last Of Us TV Show?
After years of waiting, the new series has arrived on HBO Max on Sunday. However, reviews been out for several days – and the video game adaption is proving to be a hit with critics.
As of writing, The Last Of Us stands at a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This makes it one of the highest rated video game adaptions of all time. But fans aren’t convinced the show will do the legendary PlayStation games justice.
The Last Of Us TV show tells the story of Joel and Ellie, two survivors of a worldwide pandemic caused by the contagious Cordyceps fungus.
Like The Last Of Us games, the show picks up a number of years after the onset of the pandemic and the world has been devastated. Millions are dead and millions more have been transformed into zombie-like creatures called ”Infected”.
Joel and Ellie come together to embark on a journey across post-apocalyptic America. However, they must overcome the deadly Infected and merciless killers along the way.
As mentioned The Last Of Us TV show timeline differs from that shown in the games. And that kind of change can have an impact on the age of the series’ main characters.

The first The Last Of Us PlayStation title, retrospectively dubbed “Part 1”, picks up in 2033, twenty years after the Cordyceps pandemic began in 2013. However, “Outbreak Day” in the TV show takes place in 2003 and we join Joel and Ellie in 2023.
Obviously, this means there’s a ten-year difference between the events of the games and the TV show. However, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay) appear to be the similar ages in the TV show as they are in the games.
How old is Joel in The Last of Us TV Show? Joel is actually slightly older in The Last of Us TV show than he is in games. He is 56 during the events of the show’s first season. Whereas, he is only 52 in the first game.
We know Joel is 56 because he is celebrating his 36th birthday in the first episode’s prologue which is set in 2003.
The narrative then skips forward twenty years and we see an older, greyer Joel in 2023.
