Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Launch Smashes Series Sales Records

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launch had been hotly anticipated for months. After a well-received beta, fans were eagerly awaiting the release of the full game. And while the final product has divided opinion, that hasn’t stopped its launch from breaking existing franchise sales records.

Modern Warfare 2 is the second entry in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series. 2019’s Modern Warfare breathed new life into the long-running FPS series. And that, combined with nostalgia for the original 2009 Modern Warfare 2, has propelled this latest title to astounding financial success.

Modern Warfare 2 Launch Breaks Sales Records

According to publisher Activision, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II generated more than $800 million in sales in its first three days.

Not only did the game set a new franchise record – besting 2011’s Modern Warfare 3 – it has also smashed records for Sony.

On Monday, the official PlayStation Twitter account wrote:

Congratulations to @InfinityWard and @Activision on the biggest PlayStation Store launch EVER for a Call of Duty game (including preorders and day one sales).

Modern Warfare 2‘s success isn’t limited to PlayStation, either. The game is also performing well on other platforms, too.

According to the official Steam best-sellers list, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is the platform’s top selling game.

Xbox users are also scrambling to play the new CoD, with Modern Warfare 2 topping its best-selling charts as well.

No New Call of Duty in 2023

According to a recent report by Bloomberg, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be the last yearly Call of Duty title – at least for now.

For the first time since 2005, the series won’t introduce a new game in 2023.

Instead, Activision are planning a stream of content through 2023 and beyond to fill the gap.

The failure of last year’s Call of Duty: Vanguard to meet company expectations apparently led “some executives to believe that they’re introducing new versions too rapidly”.

Warzone 2.0

With Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer off to a great start (at least financially), attention has now turned to the launch of Warzone 2.0.

The sequel to Call of Duty‘s immensely popular battle royale is due for release on November 16th and it promises some big changes.

The launch of Warzone 2.0 will be accompanied by the first season of live content for Modern Warfare 2.
