I think we can all agree that Game of Thrones‘ ending was a disappointment. Thankfully, House of the Dragon is making up for that. It has everything fans could want and is packed full of interesting and morally ambiguous characters. One character who is mentioned but not seen is Aegon the Conqueror. So, you’re probably wondering “who is Aegon The Conqueror in House of the Dragon?”
Before we get into that, it’s important to explain the context of House of the Dragon within the wider Game of Thrones universe.
House of the Dragon takes place almost 200 years before its predecessor. The prequel series follows the heyday of the House Targaryen, back when they ruled Westeros and sat on the Iron Throne.
The House Targaryen is led by patriarch King Viserys I. The series begins with his ascension to the throne before skipping forward nine years into his reign. As the show explains, this is 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen.
In House of the Dragon, Viserys is shown as being desperate for a male heir. He already has a daughter, Rhaenyra, but he hopes for a son to succeed him to the Iron Throne.
In the first episode, Viserys I’s wife, Queen Aemma, tragically dies in child birth. Their new son passed shortly after, too. This led to Verserys declaring Rhaenyra as his heir and Princess of Dragonstone.
When Viserys tells Raenyra of his decision, he talks about Aegon the Conqueror’s dream which he called “The Song of Fire and Ice”.
Aegon is mentioned numerous times in House of the Dragon, most recently in episode 4 “King of the Narrow Sea” during a dispute between Viserys and Daemon.

Who is Aegon the Conqueror in House of the Dragon?

Episode 4 is perhaps the most outrageous yet. And that’s saying something. Daemon returns to King’s Landing having defeated the Crabfeeder. He is welcomed by Viserys and they celebrate his return.
He later seduces his niece Rhaenyra in a brothel and the two begin to have sex. This abruptly ends when Daemon suddenly leaves in frustration.
News eventually reaches the King, who confronts Daemon. Daemon asks Viserys to let him marry Rhaenyra so they can return House Targaryen to full strength. An angry Viserys reminds him that he has a wife, but Daemon points out that Aegon the Conqueror also had two wives.
Who is Aegon the Conqueror in House of the Dragon? Aegon the Conqueror was the first King and founder of the Targaryen dynasty. He initiated the War of Conquest when he invaded Westeros. This ultimately led to the unification of six of the Seven Kingdoms.
Aegon also founded King’s Landing, started building the Red Keep (its construction spanned three reigns), and created the Iron Throne using the swords of his enemies.
Aegon had three dragons called Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Disturbingly, his two wives were actually his sisters – Visenya and Rhaenys.
Aegon’s ‘dragon dream’ – “The Song of Fire and Ice” – foretold the events of Game of Thrones.
